New Canadian Topographic Maps
NRCan announces the release of 324 new, updated or re-released Canadian Topographic Maps accessible via GeoGratis. This release includes new maps covering regions of Canada’s North previously unmapped at 1:50 000 scale, as well as updated maps for areas in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. See the list of newly released topographic maps on GeoGratis. With this release, the number of Canadian Topographic Maps released as part of the CanTopo collection stands at 1302. Census Division boundary file for Canada

The Population Ecumene Census Division boundary file for Canada contains a generalised population ecumene boundary with at least one ecumene pocket for every census division (CD). It can be used to produce small-scale thematic maps of statistical data. Geographic Information System software is required for creating the thematic maps. Software is not provided with the product.
This product consists of three boundary files: (1) the population ecumene (with census division polygons), (2) the census divisions and (3) the provinces and territories. See more HERE

Data provided here is available in a number of formats and currently is primarily geospatial in nature. In determining what data sets to provide as part of this pilot initiative, consideration was given to balancing the provision of data publically while respecting privacy and security concerns. Recently, the City launched its OpenData web site which can be seen at http://data.vancouver.ca/.  You can download data for your own information and use without cost. The city has also added a few layers to VanMap of interest including improved transit lines and stations (Canada Line, SkyTrain, Millennium Line), homeless shelters, and City Olympic sites.From the site… By freely sharing its data in accessible formats — while respecting privacy and security concerns — Vancouver is joining many government agencies in moving to harness the energy and involvement of citizens, community-based organizations and private businesses in everything from creative community problem-solving to the development of new service delivery ideas and solutions.

And I like this part… This is a very exciting move for the City and represents a step forward in
supporting Council’s Open Data, Open Standards, and Open Source motion.

The Atlas of Canada - Free Data

A reminder about this fine resource from the Canadian Government - The Atlas of Canada data provide coverage for all of Canada. Data elements are feature-coded and structurally clean. Base map components are available in five scales and in a number of data exchange formats. The 1: 1 000 000 and 1: 7 500 000 scales are the primary bases for all Atlas products. The 1: 30 000 000 scale data have been generalized from the two larger scales. Start off here at: http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/dataservices/free_data.html

The Atlas of Canada base Map series includes all federal, provincial and territorial boundaries as well as the international boundaries, major road and rail transportation networks, hydrography and ice cover, a selection of populated places along with administrative, provincial and national capitals. The data is suitable for Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications, electronic publishing and customized digital products.

The Atlas of Canada - Free Data

New CanVec data now available

Via Geogratis Canada,

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announces the 6^th release of CanVec, including:

- Addition of 240 new datasets;

- Update of National Road Network (NRN) for Yukon;

- Update of geographical names.

CanVec 6^th release is available in a new distribution format called FGDB (File Geodatabase). This format is provided to support the use of topographic data for large areas such as a province, a territory or the entire country.

Saskatchewan Designated and Protected Areas Digital Data - The Saskatchewan Designated Areas Data project was created to map land currently described in text (usually in gazette form) and to provide access to this geospatial data through systems that comply with national standards. The described "designated lands" include the various National and Provincial Park lands (i.e. Historic Parks, Park Reserves, Recreation Sites); environmentally sensitive lands (i.e. Wildlife Habitat Protection Act Lands, Fish and Wildlife Development Fund Lands, Game Preserves); and some privately owned lands (i.e. Conservation Easements, Ducks Unlimited Lands, Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Lands).
